ANALYSIS OF THE NIGERIAN MEDIA SCENE
The development of
media in Nigeria dated back to pre-colonial era. The first newspaper in Nigeria
was Iwe Irohin of Reverend Henry Townsend of the Church Missionary Society in
1859. The first radio broadcast was relayed into Nigerians homes in 1932 by the
colonial authorities. The first television broadcast in Nigeria was western
Nigeria Radio Vision Service of 1959 founded by Chief. Obafemi Awolowo. With the
advent of the internet, almost all media houses in Nigeria (print and
electronic) now have a site where they publish or broadcast information. This
is because, the new media has the capability of performing all the functions of
traditional media on a single platform. This is otherwise known as media convergence.
News reporting is
no longer for professional journalist alone as the audience themselves are now
partially playing the roles of journalist. A typical example of this is, TVC
(Television Continental) website where the masses file in different stories into
the station by recording scenes of events on their mobile phones. This however,
justifies consumer as becoming the producer. This feet is however made possible
through convergence of consumer devices such as smart phones with internet
access, camera, radio, television and so on.
